Komen announced today that the Somerset Health Foundation at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset is one of eight local community non-profit organizations awarded grants for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. Komen North Jersey supports grants for innovative programs in screening/diagnostic services, breast health/breast cancer education, treatment support and survivorship programs, targeting services not otherwise available to underserved women and men in their nine-county service area. The Foundation’s Senos Sanos (Healthy Breasts) program that received the grant addresses an identified need for breast health education among Latino women, who have a high risk for breast cancer and a disproportionately low screening rate due to lack of insurance coverage and access to care. A Breast Health Educator conducts community outreach at local health fairs and events specifically targeted at Latino women, and conducts group education sessions, in Spanish, at local community churches and facilities on the risk factors for breast cancer and the importance of annual mammograms. Until a cure is found, we’ll be here, working hard to raise funds so that we can support as many of these community programs as we possibly can.” Jacobs also noted that the Affiliate increased its funding to local programs by 40% this year, and also directed more than $200,000 to National Research Programs in search of new and better treatment options and, ultimately, the cures for breast cancer. In order to ensure it is funding programs that address the specific unmet breast cancer needs of the North Jersey community, Komen North Jersey works with local health care professionals and community leaders to conduct a comprehensive community needs assessment every five years (the last assessment was completed in 2015).
